CANNETO – Montepulciano -

Flattering scores by famed wine-critic Robert Parker recently propelled Canneto (www.canneto.com) into the elite of Montepulciano’s leading producer. However Canneto has been noted as one of the finest growers of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano since the early decades of the XX century, when agronomists V.Montanari; A. Musiani published an official ranking of the finest vineyard sites found in the appellation ['I vini tipici senesi' / 1933], judging the Canneto vineyard as one of the premium terroir in the county of Montepulciano.

Estate vineyards stretch over 28 hectares, 20 of which planted with native grape varieties such as Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Trebbiano and Malvasia, with a little room for Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon as well.15 hectares are enrolled for Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Docg production.

The vines grow on a clayey soil rich in Tufo and siliceous sands, at an altitude ranging from 350 to 400m asl, right at the foothills of the impressive ancient walls of Montepulciano.Prugnolo Gentile [Sangiovese] and Canaiolo are planted on south-west facing slopes and are trained with horizontal spurred cordon system.

Canneto Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva and Vino Nobile Montepulciano age in a mix of Slavonia oak casks (30-50 Hl) and French oak tonneaux (500 lt): two years of cellar ageing for the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Docg, starting January 1st following the harvest, and three years for the Riserva. Canneto’s Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Rosso di Montepulciano offer a delicious style of Sangiovese, combining structure and dry-extract with a fruit forward, hedonistic, finely balanced mouthfeel.
