Gorgo

Gorgo – Bardolino & Moscato Rosa

The beautiful Gorgo estate (www.cantinagorgo.com) lies in Custoza, a few miles south-west of Veona, in the heart of a group of post-glacial moraine hills gently rolling towards the neighboring Lake of Garda. The 28 Ha vineyard stretches throughout the hills surrounding the village of Custoza, plunging their roots deep into clayey alluvial gravels rich in manganese and calcium originated from the erosion produced by the retreat of prehistoric glaciers at the end of the Wurmian epoch.

The soil is poor and loose, with a whitish hue indicating a high concentration of active calcium carbonate and excellent pH. The micro-climate is mild and gentle all the year long thanks to the mitigating action of the cool breezes blowing from the nearby Lake of Garda.

Gorgo Azienda Agricola was established in 1974 by Roberto Bricolo and his wife Alberta, and it lies entirely within the boundaries of the Bianco di Custoza Doc appellation, part of which overlaps with the Bardolino Doc appellation. The cellar was rebuilt and enlarged in 1983 to make room to more advanced cellar technology.

The old vines of Corvina, Molinara, Rondinella and Negrara [red-berry grapes native of Valpolicella and Veneto] are tended with a mix of Pergola and Guyot system. Roberto Bricolo takes care of the vineyard management and strives to pick grapes at the optimum level of ripeness, with an eye open on adequate acidity and cool, elegant aromatic expressiveness.

The fight against the seasonal diseases of the grapevine [peronospora, oidium and Botrytis] is carried out without use of chemical pesticides and fungicides, except for traditional preparation such as copper sulfur and bouille bordelaise. Gorgo Azienda Agricola values traditional practices in the cellar as well, with no use of oak to let the delicate, refreshingly fruity aromas of Trebbiano, Tocai, Cortese, Corvina, Molinara, Rondinella and Negrara shine through in the resulting wines: Bianco di Custoza Doc, Bardolino Doc and Bardolino Chiaretto Doc.
