Podere San Luigi

San Luigi – Val di Cornia

Raised to cult status by a Robert Parker’s 97 points rating in ‘The Wine Advocate’ – in addition to 93 points by Tanzer and Three Glasses by Gambero Rosso – San Luigi Toscana Igt ‘Fidenzio’ is unarguably one the finest Cabernet Sauvignon produced in Italy today, a serious contender for equally acclaimed Bordeaux blends such as Sassicaia and Ornellaia.

What makes San Luigi ‘Fidenzio’ stand out in the over-crowded context of Supertuscan wines? Probably a fortunate and rare combination of great terroir and rare expertise in the vineyard and cellar management. San Luigi is husband & wife winery run by Annamaria Toni and Franco Tolomei, who started bottling their own wine in 1995 after selling for years the estate-grown grapes to… Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, no less!

Take the sea-facing steep Salivoli hill (a unique terroir composed of volcanic chalk and alluvial gravels), in the coastal region of southern Tuscany, take 6.000 vines x Ha enjoying the first sun of the day, sheltered by the Appennines from the cold winds blowing from the north. Last but not least take the passion and the expertise of agronomist Dott. Alberto Antonini: the picture is now quite comprehensive.

San Luigi (www.poderesanluigi.li.it) estate vineyards amount to 4 Ha, all located in the outskirts of Piombino / Val di Cornia, where a microclimate marked by dry sea breezes, unparalleled luminosity and scarce rainfalls during harvest time make for a superb expression of ripe, racy Cabernet.
