Scacciadiavoli

Scacciadiavoli – Montefalco

Scacciadiavoli is one of the oldest wineries in Montefalco, a fact well proven by the odd historical event the winery is named after: an exorcism which took place in XVII century Montefalco, involving a woman possessed by the Devil, who was made drinking some Sagrantino wine to have the devils go away. Hence the name Scacciadiavoli, which literally means ‘the Devil banisher’.

Around 1850 Prince Ugo Boncompagni renovated the estate and built up new cellars and facilities, still visible and operational today. Due to the impressive large size of Scacciadiavoli’s cellars, the locality took its name from them, and is now called ‘Localita Cantinone’ (The Big Cellar). In 1950 the grandfather of today’s owner Amilcare Pambuffetti acquired the whole Scacciadiavoli estate from Boncompagni family, with 20 Ha planted with Sagrantino and Grechetto grapes.

Out of 20 hectares of vineyard land, 11 are reserved to Sagrantino di Montefalco, 6 to Montefalco Rosso and 3 to Grechetto. In the recent years, Dott. Stefano Chioccioli was hired as consulting enologist, and short after the new Scacciadiavoli wines were rated 94 points by revered wine-guru Robert Parker.
